Lymphatic drainage massage is a therapy that uses long gentle stroking pressure to help increase the Lymph flow, and by that action, assist in the elimination of toxins and reduce post-operative swelling.

The Lymph channels are an important circulatory system in the body – helping it to fight infection by transporting nutrients to cells and disposing of the body’s toxins by flushing them away through the Lymph nodes.

The Lymph gland and the ebb and flow of the fluid around the body are key factors in maintaining general health and wellness; they play an important role in the immune system and can be beneficial in aiding the body in the recovery process following surgery. Promotion of lymphatic flow around the body can assist with:

  • Helps the body to remove waste products and metabolites from the treated area. 
  • Keeps the lymph vessels/ channels active, thereby improves the function of the immune system.
  • Speed up the healing process of the skin such as scar tissue, help to reduce Cellulite and reduce post-operative swelling. 

The Massage Procedure

It is important to get into the correct mindset, and as with any massage treatment, try to relax after arrival, having informed your therapist of anything that may effect the proposed session such as ongoing medical conditions, active medication or being pregnant, for example. The massage will usually be conducted in a comfortable room as a higher body temperature is more conducive to the flow of Lymphatic fluids.

You will be placed on a massage table and the procedure is then similar to a normal massage with the client relaxing as much as possible while the therapist will work gently upwards from the foot area. The lymphatic massage uses extremely light pressure compared to standard massage techniques with long, gentle strokes and gentle pumping movements directed towards the Lymph nodes which are located within the groin, armpits and neck area.

The treatment length may vary, but on average it can last 20 – 45 minutes. The massage and its varying levels of gentle pressure, coupled with some tenderness may leave you feeling a little tired. It’s recommended that you spend the rest of your day with uncomplicated schedule to take mental stock of the experience and giving your body time to adapt. It’s quite common to experience a healthy thirst after the session which is quite natural when you think about it, as the process of Lymphatic drainage is all about flushing those toxins out of your system.

Remember to maintain healthy activity such as walking, some gentle exercise and copious amounts of fresh water. All these factors, coupled with the massage will help to encourage and maintain a healthier and balanced lymphatic system, resulting in a quicker recovery.
