ED Pharmacists Slash Inappropriate Antibiotics

In January 2017, a 25-bed regional hospital in Maine embarked on an experiment to reduce the unnecessary use of antibiotics. When patients were diagnosed with bronchitis or a viral illness, they received a “wellness bag” that contained items to help them recover, such as cough drops, hand sanitizers and tissues, along with educational materials on the importance of avoiding unnecessary medical treatments and interventions.
